Gareth & Matt

We met in Boston in December 2015. Gareth had recently moved there from Ireland. Matt had just started his PhD program. We met on a dating app and went on our first date at a pizza restaurant and bowling alley (Matt won and still has the scorecard to prove it!). We joke that we were both disappointed that the other person didn’t have a stronger accent.  We instantly connected over our shared sense of humor, competitive spirit, family values, mutual interests, and love for children and animals.

Gareth, asked Matt on the first date if he wanted children –he said yes and wasn’t scared off! We got serious quickly. We took trips together, met each other’s friends and family, and moved into a cozy one-bedroom apartment in 2017. In 2018, we mutually proposed. We couldn’t wait, so we got married at City Hall! We then held a larger celebration in June 2019 in Maine (where we’d gone for our first weekend trip).

Matt finished his PhD in 2020, and we relocated to Connecticut so that Matt could complete his clinical training at Yale. When the time came for Matt to pursue a more permanent job at a university, we decided to move back to the Carolinas to be close to family. We made the move and bought our first house in 2022, and we’ve been thriving here ever since while making plans to grow our family!

Gareth was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up playing soccer, doing speech and debate, and spending time with his large extended family. Gareth studied business in college and now works for an HR tech company. He loves the flexibility of working remotely. In his free time, Gareth enjoys working out, pickleball, trivia, television, music, video games, and following the English Premier League (soccer).

I was drawn to Gareth for his humor, confidence, and intelligence, but I fell in love with his deeply kind and generous nature. He has a way of making everyone he meets feel seen and cared for. He is gracious and forgiving, but also loyal and protective, and also unafraid to stand up for those he loves. Unsurprisingly, Gareth is wonderful with children. He is both playful and nurturing, and he knows how to communicate with kids on their level. I am so grateful for the opportunity to deepen our partnership as fathers.

Matt was born and raised in the Carolinas. He grew up playing tennis, going camping, doing Boy Scouts, and studying hard! He earned his PhD in clinical psychology, specializing in children and adolescents. He works as a college professor and also sees therapy clients. Matt’s favorite hobbies include yoga, lifting weights, pickleball, video games, reading, television, and trivia.

Matt is one of the hardest workers I know. His dedication to his career, knowledge, and helping others continually impresses me. He’s quiet, unexpectedly funny, and has a competitive nature to match my own. Seeing him with our nieces and friends’ children makes me even more excited to start our journey together as parents – the subtle change in his voice when he’s speaking to them makes my heart skip a beat.

We have so much love to give to a child. We cherish spending time with the children in our lives and being “Uncle Gareth and Uncle Matt” – but we want nothing more than to be “Dad” and “Papa.”

We are guided by several core values – most importantly, a sense of unconditional love and acceptance for children. We will give them the foundation, resources, guidance, and space to find happiness, love, health, and joy in their lives.

We will instill the importance of kindness, fairness, and hard work, but we will ensure that our child knows they can come to us when they make mistakes. We will love our child no matter what, for exactly who they are and who they become.
